Halloween can be sweet in other ways

Today my life changed. Today my sister’s life changed forever. My niece Alison Rose was born at 5:59am this morning. A beautiful little 5lb 6oz baby girl. Our mother sent us all a little angel from heaven to love and adore. My sister and I will forever be linked to the day her daughter was born. I’ll never forget the moment I first saw my niece’s beautiful eyes. The moment I saw my sister’s eyes looking at her daughter. That bond is unbreakable. The bond that she will have with her daughter and the bond that we have as sisters. Nothing in the world today on this Halloween day will ever be as sweet as my precious little niece and the bonds we now will all share. I’m looking forward to a lifetime of them with my sister, her husband, my husband, our families and my sweet little niece Alison Rose.

NYC...Oh how I love you

I haven't had much time lately to post or even to work on items for my posts. The past few weeks/weekends have flown by. I didn't want this week to go by without getting around to posting about our day in NYC. We went in for my cousin Stan's big 40 last saturday. It was a beautiful day weather wise. I'm not going to touch on where we went and what we did. What I want to speak about is what we ate. And we ATE! And as I'm typing this and looking at the clock I realize I'm not even going to speak. I'll let the pictures do the talking. All I will say is if you get a chance to get to NYC anytime soon check out BLT Prime. (One of the many locations we visited that night.)

Tom's Halloween Display

As promised (twice already) here is the video clip Tom's Halloween display. He's not completely done with his set up (hence part of the reason i've been holding off) but here is what he's accomplished so far. As for the desk, I'm more than half way there. With school, Junior Achievement and our busy personal life it's been hard to find the time to work on it this week. But it's coming along. I have the entire base painted just working on the top now. I wish I could find a way to make paint dry quicker than I'd likely be done. But for now enjoy Tom's display.

Have a spooky evening!

What's your yellow brick road?

I had a “yellow brick road” revelation two weeks ago while attending my first interior design course. It’s a class on the business of interior design. While sitting in the class, I realized that most of the students in it have taken some of the interior design courses already so I felt intimated that I didn’t know a lot and that maybe I shouldn’t be in this class just yet. Then I thought I probably know more than most of them. And that even though I don’t have those other classes behind me I have something that they probably don’t have. I’ve already ran a business. I was ahead of the game. I knew the ins and outs of the day to day minutia. I knew my failures and my successes. I look back on that time as some of my happiest moments, I lived the good life and that’s when I came to my “yellow brick road” revelation.

I sat back and listened to my professor speak about how he got to where he was today and how he started this program at the university and I thought about my own life and my own “yellow brick road”. I thought about what I was doing now in life, what I had done in my past, and how that has all lead me to here. The song says “follow the yellow brick road” but in the movie Dorothy had the option to venture off and to choose one way or the other. The red brick road or the yellow brick road. What were my choices in life that lead me to that class? What if I had opted for a the other road? See I’m a ruminator. I think things over and over again and try to figure out why something is the way it is or why I am at this place in my life. I go over my past and my red and my yellow brick roads and try to figure out at just what point in time got me to here. That’s a ruminator. It’s who I am. So as I still try to figure out where to go from here I think about how I even got there. How I ended up in that class. All I could come up to was last winter while re-doing our kitchen I looked at Tom and said this is what I like. This is what I enjoy. This is what I want to know more about. And from that point last February I went out and got books, searched the net, reached out to different schools and decided that I was going to go full throttle. I was going to sign up for classes in interior design, I was going to take sewing lessons and painting classes, I was going to read, (Something more than just a magazine. It would be books!) and I was going to go home after work and try new things. Life wasn’t just going to be work, work, work, weekends and back to work. It was going to be work, home doing something, weekends taking on big projects and then back to work. I planned to feel accomplished by the time Monday mornings would roll around. And as always life does get in the way and sometimes it’s hard to stick to those plans but I told myself that I needed to start doing that. Because at the end of the day that would ultimately make me happy. Doing something that I would feel accomplished about would get me to my happiest yellow brick road. The road that would lead me to what made me feel good about life, what made me feel accomplished. That sense of accomplishment that I used to get in my previous job when I’d redo the store window or have someone acknowledge the collection I just put on the floor. The sense of pride that someone loves what I created.

So even though I don’t know where this road will ultimately take me I know that those many roads I had followed in my past got me to where I am right now. And I can say I’m a lot happier now than I was a year ago because I’m following my dreams again. Following our dreams. And when I awoke this morning I couldn’t wait to get dressed and run to our garage to see how my latest project turned out. I slaved over our new desk this weekend. Started it last Saturday and finished stripping it yesterday. (I'll eventually get around to a tutorial on how to strip the veneer. I know I even owe our followers a video of Tom's Halloween display. That had to take a backseat this weekend. I'll have it posted by end of week. Promise.) I took out all the drawers and re-stained the inside and side panels but not the front as I will paint that. (It’s a good idea to stain the drawers if you don’t plan on painting the insides. I never paint the insides as they tend to then get tight and stick. By staining the drawers it will lock in any smells and give the drawers a clean finish. Even if you are planning to line them as I am leaning towards it still gives it a cleaner appearance and kills any smells that might be lingering behind when refurbishing an antique.) I’m still undecided what I’m going to do with this piece. I’m thinking of staining the top and then painting the base old white with a distressed tone and a dark wax finish. The hip cup is the leather inlay. I've tried to clean it up as you can tell from the picture but it’s taken a good beating so I’m on the fence and thinking I might paint the leather inlay the old white. I think it will look beautiful with the dark wood top. Or maybe I'll give the top a crackle finish. Guess we will just have to wait and see what I ultimately decide.

Ideas? Suggestions? Thoughts? Because I can really use them right now!!

My favorite season

A lot has occurred in the past 2 weeks. I started school, we started our Junior Achievement program at our office, my best friend had her baby and I’ve been swamped at work. It’s been a great two weeks!  Sleep…it’s overrated. Especially since I haven’t gotten any lately. With everything going on it’s hard for me to sleep. I get home from classes on Tuesday nights after 10 and I’m wired. So much so that a million ideas are flowing through my head. I haven’t sat down to read a magazine in weeks. But I’ve managed to stay busy on my house and on my projects and I even snuck a day in with my godson and his sister at the farm.

I’m currently working on some homemade Christmas gifts. Since a few people who read this blog will be receiving one I’m not going to post it just yet but I do have a nice surprise for everyone. I also picked up a new desk for my office last weekend at a tag sale so I’ve been busy stripping that down and getting it ready for a coat of paint. The hubby put up his Halloween décor on Sunday night. I’ll get around to posting a video of his stuff this weekend. It definitely deserves a video. A first for this blog!! But in the meantime on this dark dreary fall day I wanted to give you some pictures to look at that would make you smile that it is fall. (Which is my favorite season by the way!)

Happy Fall!!

Cookies in a jar

Halloween is probably one of my favorite holidays. Tom and I love to decorate the house and to get dressed in costumes. Always been an equally favorite time of year for us. As I've been trying to get more into my creative mind I decided I wanted to make some treats for some children in our lives. I've seen this idea in stores like William Sonoma and thought I could do that. I'm going to let the picture speak for itself. It literally takes less than 5 minutes to put together and is a lot more fun giving out then candy. Trust me, I just gave 2 away this weekend!!

Cookies in a jar recipe

Each recipe makes 2 jars

1+1+1=3

My best friend Jill and her husband had their baby on Tuesday night. It’s a Boy!! Sweet baby boy James. He is now the youngest of three siblings. I went to spend some time with Jill and James last night.

He is so cute! Don’t you agree??

My mom always told me that it was just as important to give the baby’s siblings a new present as it was to give the baby. That the siblings are the ones who have to make adjustments to this new person in their life and if you give them presents at a time when their new sibling is receiving many they don’t feel slighted. When Jill’s middle son Robert was born (my lovable Godson) I only had to buy for one sibling, Jill's daughter Jules (along with Robert of course). Easy enough, I got her a cabbage patch baby doll. But now I was trying to shop for Jules and Robert (and James) and I wanted their gifts to be similar and something that would say we are happy we have a new brother. I found tee shirts at Carters and light up buttons at the party store that said “I’m the big sister” and “I’m the big brother” and put them together with special notes to each of them telling them what a good brother and sister they will be to their new baby brother. I rolled the tee shirts into the notes and into tissue and used the button as the tag. I think they came out pretty cute.

Do you give gifts to the other siblings or just the baby? What are some gifts you like to give?
